Turnbull & Asser Black Tie with square motifs

$

0

In the 1999 movie The World Is Not Enough, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) wears several Turnbull & Asser ties, including this black tie with grey, tan and burnt orange square motif.

The tie can be seen in the MI6 headquarters scene and the following Q-boat chase on the Thames. In the first part of the scene, Bond (Pierce Brosnan) arrives at MI6 and gives Moneypenny the Romeo Y Julieta cigar, which she dumps in the garbage bin. After the assassination of King, Pierce jumps out of the MI6 building with the special Q boat to chase the female assassin. During the chase on the river we can see Bond, in a classic move, straightening his Turnbull & Asser tie while being submerged with his boat. The gesture is reminiscent of the tank chase in GoldenEye, where Bond straightens his tie while steering a tank through the streets of St. Petersburg.

This Turnbull & Asser tie is made in their own manufactory in London. Made from 100% finest quality silk, produced in England. This silk has more warp and weft yarns per square inch than is customary, making the fabric denser and more substantial in both weight and feel. The Blade width (the widest point of the tie) is 3 3/4" (9.5 cm) and the length is approximately 57" (145 cm).

This tie, from the 'Exclusive' range is currently available again (since October 2010) on the Turnbull & Asser online shop or at one of the Turnbull & Asser store locations:

Bond Lifestyle Holiday Gift Guide 2015

James Bond is not the only well-dressed British spy this year. Kingsman: The Secret Service, an upcoming action-spy film, will feature a stylish wardrobe put together by the costume designer and director in collaboration with men's style website MR PORTER. Bond Lifestyle will take a first look at the clothes and accessories, which will be available later this month. The pieces are inspired by Savile Row tradition and some brands are known quite well to Bond.

Kingsman mr porter

Kingsman: The Secret Service is based upon the comic book by Mark Millar, and tells the story of a super-secret spy organisation that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency's ultra-competitive training programme - just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. The movie stars Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Michael Caine, Mark Strong and Samuel L. Jackson, and appearances of Adele (singer of the SkyFall theme song), Elton John, Lady Gaga and David Beckham. The film will be released in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2015, and on 13 February 2015 in the United States. Watch the trailer below:

MR PORTER set up a pioneering new business venture with acclaimed director Matthew Vaughn, through the creation of a new menswear label, Kingsman, inspired by his forthcoming feature film, Kingsman: The Secret Service. The entire bespoke 60-piece Kingsman menswear collection, which is featured throughout the film, will launch exclusively on MR PORTER on January 13th 2015.

kingsman mr porter cast

Mr Vaughn and the team at MR PORTER worked closely with award-winning costume designer Ms Arianne Phillips to design and create iconic pieces inspired by Savile Row tradition, and made by the best in British production including Bremont timepieces, Cutler and Gross eyewear, Drake’s ties and pocket squares, Corgi knitwear, Crockett & Jones and George Cleverley footwear, Mackintosh outerwear, Swaine Adeney Brigg accessories and Turnbull & Asser shirting.

Some of these brands are featured in James Bond films. Most famously Turnbull & Asser shirts and ties, which were worn by Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in their Bond films. Crockett & Jones shoes are worn by Bond in SkyFall (and maybe also in SPECTRE). Swaine Adeney Brigg created Bond's famous suitcase in From Russia With Love. This black leather case with red lining is still available. Finally Cutler & Gross sunglasses were sported by villain Dominic Greene (played by Mathieu Amalric) in Quantum of Solace.

The Collection

Below you can find some of the pieces that will be featured in the film. More details on who wears which pieces will be announced later. The Kingsman collection will be available in January on the MrPorter.com website.

Both Floris and Turnbull & Asser have a strong connection with James Bond.

Floris and James Bond
The brand Floris is mentioned by author Ian Fleming in some of his Bond novels and Fleming himself was a fan of the Floris 89 fragrance.

In the novel Dr. No, James Bond and Honeychile Rider use Floris Lime bath essence and Guerlain bathcubes to improve their bathing experience. They find these bath essences in their luxurious prison room in Doctor No's lair.

In the novel Moonraker: "Floris provides the soaps and lotions in the lavatories and bedrooms". In Diamonds Are Forever, Floris bath essence is mentioned: "He would have to send a cable to May to get things fixed. Let’s see - flowers, bath essence from Floris, air the sheets...".

Turnbull & Asser and James Bond
Turnbull & Asser made dress shirts with the famous turnback cuff for Sean Connery in his Bond films, and Pierce Brosnan as James Bond wears several Turnbull & Asser ties. The last Turnbull & Asser items seen in a Bond film are the tuxedo shirt and bow tie worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale.

Both companies are based on Jermyn Street, in the heart of London: Turnbull & Asser's flagship store is located on 71/72 Jermyn Street since the year 1903 - relatively recent compared to the incredible 286 years since the Floris store was opened (in 1730!) on 89 Jermyn Street.

The history and Britishness of the brands are a perfect match in the newly developed fragrance 71/72 (named after Turnbull & Asser's flagship location at 71/72 Jermyn Street). The fresh, woody and aromatic fragrance has been created to evoke the elegance of the rich wood furniture of both the Floris and Turnbull & Asser store interiors. James Bond, the ultimate British Secret Agent, is known for his good taste. Agent 007 saves the world in British tailor made suits and shirts, drives and destroys British luxury cars and superyachts where ever he goes, and calms down at the end of a long day in the field with a shot of Scotch whisky in a British crystal tumbler.

Bond Lifestyle Made In Britain

In this new article series, Bond Lifestyle takes a closer look at the 'Made in Britain' products used by Bond in the films and Ian Fleming novels.

With "Made In Britain" Bond Lifestyle refers to products of which the majority of the manufacturing process has taken place in the United Kingdom, meaning “United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland” (which includes Scotland and Wales).

In this episode we ask James Cook, Turnbull & Asser’s Davies Street store manager, about the production of Turnbull & Asser shirts and ties seen in many James Bond films.

Can you tell us about the history of Turnbull & Asser?
John Arthur Turnbull and Earnest Asser established what later on became known as Turnbull & Asser in Church Place in 1885. After John died a decade later, Earnest took over and moved the ready-to-wear and bespoke business to Jermyn Street and Bury Street respectively, and the stores remain there to this day.

Turnbull & Asser was first awarded a royal warrant in 1919 as HM Queen Alexandra’s glovemaker; however their long-standing royal warrant for shirtmaking was granted in 1980 by HRH Prince of Wales – the first warrant Prince Charles ever gave. This is currently held by retail director and head of bespoke Steven Quin.

The brand opened its first New York store on East 57th Street in 1998, with a second NY location opened earlier this year in the Oculus building of the Westfield World Trade Center. A third London store was opened on Davies Street, Mayfair in 2015.

What does Made in Britain mean in the case of Turnbull & Asser? Are Turnbull & Asser shirts and ties completely made in Britain?
James Cook: "Made in England means that the product has been cut and sewn in our workshops using the vast skill set and experience from our skilled workforce which is second to none. Our shirts and ties are hand-crafted in our factories in Gloucester and Kent respectively. Our pocket squares are designed by us and printed by Adamley Textiles in Cheshire."

Dean Gomilsek-Cole, head of design at Turnbull & Asser: "There is a certain reputation associated with products that are made in England because of the high standards demanded in the industry. Everything is much closer to home; manufacturers can get in direct contact with designers to keep the communication clear and the quality consistent, and many of the craftsmen and women in our factory have worked with us for generations. T&A also has long-term relationships with its mills and printers meaning all the work is personal and there is no dubious practice going on.

Secondly we have a very strong sense of pride at Turnbull & Asser; as an English company we see every shirt as an ambassador for both the brand and the country so they must all be perfect."

Creating the Turnbull & Asser magic

How did Turnbull & Asser get involved in the Bond films?
Turnbull & Asser had a customer called Terence Young who was an ex Irish Guards Officer and was the first Director of the Bond franchise in film. As you will be aware, Ian Fleming mentions that Bond bought his shirts from Jermyn Street but he never mentions the shop. Terence Young brought a young Sean Connery to the store to be fitted.

In which Bond films can Turnbull & Asser products be seen (this can be a list, do you have any information on the exact products seen in the Sean Connery Bond films? And did Brosnan wear Turnbull & Asser shirts in his films, or only T&A neck ties?
To date Turnbull & Asser has dressed James Bond in twelve of 007’s screen adventures starring Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig.

Alongside the iconic Dr. No shirt, Sean Connery wore a Turnbull & Asser black Barathea batwing bow with his tux in Dr. No (1962).

Heirs to Sean Connery’s James Bond George Lazenby and Roger Moore were Turnbull & Asser customers but did not wear T&A as 007.

"We didn’t make bespoke shirts for Timothy Dalton’s Bond", says retail director and head of bespoke Steven Quin, "but I do remember him buying a quantity of ready-mades from (Turnbull & Asser’s store on) Jermyn Street at the time the Bond films were in production".

pierce brosnan turnbull asser die another day

Turnbull & Asser’s Davies Street store manager James Cook: "When Pierce Brosnan became Bond in he was clothed by the now defunct store Sulka. He returned to Turnbull & Asser when the Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming came back to what I believe is the home of Bond. She has a wonderful eye for clothing and she worked with her team and made the Brosnan films some of the most stylish. She knew that I liked Bond and she invited me to see the film Die Another Day being made at Pinewood Studios. I ended up being in the film which was in the ice palace.

During filming, shirt specialist Mr. Paul Cuss flew to Ireland to measure and fit Pierce, and afterwards he was taken Pierce Brosnan’s favourite pub for a pint. Turnbull & Asser has always has had a very close relationship with the film industry, as can be seen in our Turnbull & Asser Archive book."

The Turnbull & Asser Archive Book gives a great insight into the history and famous clients of the brand

What makes the Turnbull & Asser shirts and ties stand out from its competition?
Our shirts and ties use the finest materials. Turnbull & Asser has a vast historical archive of patterns and the colours we use are vibrant. Also the construct of our products is second to none.

Our seamstresses and craftsman have decades of experience and a strict set of checks at each stage so that only the best make it into production.

What are some of the advantages of producing in the UK?
The advantage of producing in the UK is that when it comes to a luxury product is the history and expertise of the workforce and for our international customers is that we can produce a genuine product made in the UK.

What are some of the challenges of producing in the UK?
I would not call it a challenge; we train and develop skills, which takes time and we build on our past for the future.

What is your favourite Bond film?
That is a very hard question as over the 26 films that have been made I have a few favourites: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Die Another Day (being in the film) SkyFall, SPECTRE.

Who is your favourite James Bond actor?
They are all from different eras - I like them all as they make Bond their own.

Turnbull & Asser released a new range of exclusive Mr Benn pocket squares with designs inspired by James Bond. The pocket squares are a limited edition run of 100 pieces per design.

James Bond Mr Benn Pocket Squares Turnbull Asser folded

About Mr Benn
Mr Benn is a character created by David McKee who appears in several children's books originally printed in 1967. It was followed by an animated television series transmitted by the BBC in 1971 and 1972.

Each Mr Benn story has a similar format. Mr Benn, a man wearing a black suit and bowler hat, leaves his house at 52 Festive Road and visits a fancy-dress costume shop where he is invited by the moustachioed, fez-wearing shopkeeper to try on a particular outfit. He leaves the shop through a magic door at the back of the changing room and enters a world appropriate to his costume, where he has an adventure (which usually contains a moral) before the shopkeeper reappears to lead him back to the changing room, and the story comes to an end. Mr Benn returns to his normal life, but is left with a small souvenir of his magical adventure.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the character, the #00Benn collection launched as part of the David McKee exhibition from 16th August until 16th September 2017 at the Illustration Cupboard, nestled between the Turnbull & Asser stores on Jermyn Street and Bury Street.

For this pocket square collection, Mr Benn steps in the shoes of secret agent 007. Each pocket square represents a step in the classic Mr Benn story: Festive Road, shop visit, changing room.

Priced at £75 or €90 each, the limited edition pocket squares will be available online at Turnbull & Asser website (UK and EU only), and in-store at the Turnbull & Asser Jermyn Street and Davies Street locations.
